Searching Databases

What is a database?

In technical terms, a database is a large collection of data organized especially for rapid search and retrieval, usually by a computer. Most databases are web-based, meaning their contents are accessed via the Internet and a web browser.

In library research terms, databases are tools used to find information (usually articles from newspapers and magazines). Searching databases is a much faster and more reliable way to find articles than using an internet search engine like Google or Yahoo.

In this section of the tutorial, you will learn about accessing databases from University Libraries. You will also learn about searching Academic Search Premier, a good starting place for most research projects.
