CardCat, the Web, and Databases
Searching the catalog isn't the same as searching the World Wide Web or Databases.
CardCat gives you access to:
- Library materials selected by librarians
- Physical items the library has, like books, CDs, videos, etc.
- Electronic resources such as some government publications
- Note: No Journal or magazine articles will be found here
The Web:
- Contains billions of web pages
- Has no quality control
- Anyone can publish on the Web even if the information is incorrect, misleading, or outdated
Article databases such as Academic Search Premier give you access to:
- Information about magazine and journal articles indexed by the database
- Often the full text of articles
Although you will access all of these resources via the Web they are not synonymous
with the Web. To learn more about the Web and Web research see our
Mastering the Web tutorial.
